The Royals have sent 23-year old righty reliever Kelvin Herrera to AAA-ball.  Herrera pitched in 19 games (0 starts) for the Royals so far this year and he is 2-4 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  He worked 20 1/3 innings for the Royals this year and he gave up 19 hits, walked 8 batters and he whiffed 24 of them.  Herrera had a big time issue with the long ball as he has given up 8 homers so far this year.  Herrera will be back soon if he gets straightened out in AAA-ball.  The Royals have called up 27-year old righty reliever Louis Coleman.  He made his 2013 debut for the Royals last night, working a shutout inning.  He also pitched in 14 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball earlier this year and he was 2-1 with 3 saves, a 1.03 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.  Coleman has pitched in 91 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Royals and he is 1-4 with 1 save, a 3.22 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.

Eric Hosmer is experiencing a power shortage for the Kansas City Royals in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by joelapinski on Thursday 23 May 2013 at 10:53 am

23-year old lefty swinging 1B Eric Hosmer has shown an utter lack of power so far in 2013.  He has played in 41 games for the Royals so far this year and he is 39 for 148 (.264 avg, .671 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 1 homer, 12 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  In his first two year with the Royals (2011 and 2012), Hosmer combined for 33 homers and 138 RBIs.  So a sudden lack of power has been puzzling so far in 2013.  The Royals hope that Hosmer starts hitting the ball with authority in the near future.

The Royals have placed 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 16th, due to a sprained right ankle.  Dyson has played in 18 games for the Royals so far this year and he is 11 for 42 (.268 avg, .847 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 8 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  The Royals have called up 27-year old lefty swinging David Lough to replace Dyson on the active roster.  Lough played in 36 games in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 52 of 153 (.340 avg, .870 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Lough got his first taste of the majors for the Royals in 2012.  He played in 20 games for the Royals last year and he was 14 for 59 (.237 avg, .597 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 0 homers, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  This is a bad break for Dyson, as he was just starting to get more P.T.

The Kansas City Royals have released 31-year old righty reliever Blaine Boyer after he exercised his opt out clause in his minor league deal.  He knew he wasn’t going to get called up any time soon.  Boyer pitched in 13 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 0-1 with 1 save, a 3.00 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  He gave up 15 hits and 3 walks while whiffing 18 batters in his fifteen innings in the minors for the Royals.  Boyer has pitched in 233 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 9-14 with 2 saves, a 4.81 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Boyer won’t be missed by the Royals, but at the same time, he shouldn’t have much of an issue finding a new team.

John Mayberry was a good power source for the Kansas City Royals

Blogged under Blast from the Past, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 17 May 2013 at 6:58 am

Lefty swinging 1B John Mayberry was a really solid power source in his six years with the Kansas City Royals.  His best season without a doubt was in 1975, when he finished 2nd in the voting for the A.L. MVP award.  He played in 156 games for the Royals in 1975 and he was 161 of 554 (.291 avg, .963 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 34 homers, 106 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  He walked 119 times in 1975, while only whiffing 73 times as he was locked in at the plate.  Mayberry played in 897 games in his six years with the Royals and he was 816 of 3,131 (.261 avg, .822 OPS) with 459 runs scored, 143 homers, 552 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.  Mayberry hit at least 20 homers in five of his six years with the Royals and he knocked in at least 100 runs three times, as he was very productive for them.  He also represented the Royals at the All-Star Game twice.  Mayberry is still #9 in games played (897) in Royals’ history.  He is also #8 in OPS (.822), #6 in homers (143) and #6 in RBIs (552) in Royals’ history.  Mayberry was only with the Royals for a short time, but he made his mark.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by joelapinski on Monday 13 May 2013 at 10:56 am

29-year old lefty swinging 2B Chris Getz is blowing his big chance so far in 2013 for the Royals.  He has played in 25 games for the Royals so far this year and he is 16 for 78 (.205 avg, .555 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  Getz came into this season as the Royals’ starting 2B, but he has been losing P.T. to 29-year old switch-hitting Elliot Johnson lately.  Johnson has now played in 18 games for the Royals so far this year and he is 11 for 40 (.275 avg, .668 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 2 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Getz better step up soon or he’s going the be riding the pine a lot in the very near future.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Saturday 11 May 2013 at 11:56 am

The Royals have released 35-year old righty reliever Dan Wheeler.  Wheeler pitched in 11 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP.  Wheeler gave up 28 hits (3 homers) in only 15 innings in the minors this year, as he got hit really hard.  Wheeler pitched in 589 games (9 starts) in his 13 years in the majors and he is 25-43 with a 43 saves, a 3.98 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Royals, as they have a pretty good bullpen.
